Cardinal & Gold Scholarships
The Cardinal & Gold Scholarship program, which began in 2011, stresses the importance of creating Iowa State University legacies with financial support from Iowa State alumni and friends for current, first-generation ISU students from the state of Iowa.
The ISU Alumni Association Cardinal & Gold Scholarship annually awards $1,000 each to six upperclassmen (as defined by credit hours) from the state of Iowa representing each of Iowa State’s six undergraduate colleges (depending on qualified applicants). The Association’s goal is to endow all six scholarships using a portion of the proceeds from the Cardinal & Gold Gala as well as direct donations from individual donors. As of August 2014, five of the six ISU Alumni Association Cardinal and Gold Gala Scholarships have been fully endowed.
One of these scholarships was endowed by Terry ('71) and Craig ('71) Denny of Lenexa, Kansas in 2014 as the Terry & Craig Denny ISU Alumni Association Cardinal & Gold Gala/College of Human Sciences Scholarship. The Denny Scholarship awards $1,000 to a first-generation ISU undergraduate student from the state of Iowa enrolled in the College of Human Sciences.
In 2013, Lora and Russ Talbot of Belmond, Iowa fully endowed the Lora & Russ Talbot ISU Alumni Association Cardinal & Gold College of Veterinary Medicine Scholarship to ensure that students in the College of Veterinary Medicine would also benefit from the Cardinal and Gold Scholarship Program. The Talbots have added additional funds to their scholarship endowment making it possible for a third-year Veterinary Medicine student who graduated from a high school in Iowa to now receive an annual $2,000 award.
If you would like to have additional information about the Association’s scholarship program, make a donation, or endow a Cardinal & Gold Scholarship in your name or as a memorial, please contact Katie Lickteig at kbruxvoo@iastate.edu. We greatly appreciate your support of this high priority and significant initiative. You are helping to make a difference in the lives of our students.

Being the first in my family to attend college means more than working towards a degree. College is my opportunity to prepare for my future and the future of generations after me. As the eldest of six children, my siblings have always tended to look up to me. Knowing that I can pave the way for them, I have continued through my college education. Making the decision to attend college was anything but easy since most members of my family didn’t understand the importance of obtaining a college degree. To me, being a first a generation college student means having the strength and motivation to overcome obstacles and accomplish the goals you have set for yourself. I want to thank all of the alumni for donating towards the Cardinal and Gold scholarship. I am very appreciative. You have helped make my experience at Iowa State a positive one. Thank you!
Tisa Tollenaar
Junior in Journalism and Mass Communication
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Sigourney, Iowa
One of my biggest ambitions in life has been to influence positive change in the world, which is why I chose to major in journalism. Because I am a first-generation student, I am completely financing myself through college. I cannot begin to express how thankful I am to all the people who have donated to this scholarship so I am able to continue toward my goal. I hope someday I am able to pay it forward to the next first-generation college students.
Erik Montelongo (recipient of the Lora & Russ Talbot ISU Alumni Association Cardinal & Gold College of Veterinary Medicine Scholarship)
Third Year in Veterinary Medicine
College of Veterinary Medicine
Indianola, Iowa
I just hope to show people that no matter the background you come from, that if you put your mind and heart into believing you can be something, you can. I, as well as many others, know that Lora and Russ donate toward many scholarships at Iowa State University. Yes, I'm very appreciative of their generosity toward my scholarship, but each scholarship recipient gets more than that with Lora and Russ. We get two caring and compassionate people supporting us and wanting to see us succeed.
